As I'm sure you've heard many times before, getting involved on your campus is extremely important.
Involvement not only helps you find experience that you can put on a resume but can also become a great way to make friends.
But what if, on top of all that, you're also working for a greater cause? Many colleges offer service organizations that allow you to do some good and get that experience you need.
There are many different kinds of organizations: Some may focus on service in general, while others may focus on a certain event (i.e. Dance Marathon or Relay for Life).
Here's some advice on finding the right organization for you.
What are your interests?
Do you like to dance? Or maybe fashion's more of your thing? Are you a runner? Figure out what you like to do and start from there.
Most likely, your school will have an organization that caters to your interests. For example, Fordham University's Fashion for Philanthropy organization hosts an annual Fashion Show to benefit The Make-A-Wish Foundation. Last year, the group raised over $5,000 from its show. Talk about fashion with a purpose!
What's your time commitment?
If you're slammed with schoolwork and other organizations, you might not be able to commit to anything on a weekly basis. Consider this when you're figuring out what you want to get involved in.
Maybe you can only participate in an event-based trip, such as service trip over Spring Break. Or maybe you can only join in every other weekend.
Take a look at your schedule and workload before making a decision!
What are your strengths?
The skills required for each service organization are going to be slightly different, so do your research before jumping in.
Maybe your strength is being able to connect and talk with people. You may just be a great volunteer to help with fundraising.
Figure out what you're good at and how you can help an organization. If you aren't sure, ask one of the organization leaders for ideas on what you could help with.
