Super Foods of Summer

Ah, it’s that time of the year again. Finally, the past two stressful semesters are over with, and you can look forward to all the fabulous things that come along with summer!

In between lying on the beach, working and catching up with friends, hopefully you’ll find you have more time to focus on you and your diet. With that in mind, I researched some of the super foods of summer.

Super foods are foods that are packed with nutrients. Each super food can benefit you in a different way. Below I’ll discuss some delicious super foods for you to incorporate into your diet this summer to help ensure a healthy, happy summer.

Greens: According to, studies continuously confirm that people who eat a diet high in green, leafy vegetables run a far lower risk of heart disease and cancer. Fresh, raw, green leafy vegetables contain high doses of chlorophyll, easily digestible proteins, enzymes and a wide range of vitamins and minerals. These particular vegetables act as mini-transfusions for the blood, a health tonic for the brain and immune system and a cleanser of the kidneys. Instead of eating on the go during your workday, pack a salad for lunch every day this week.

Watermelon: According to, the best way to get all the good stuff from watermelon is to juice the entire thing, rind, seeds and all. Not only is watermelon extremely hydrating, it’s also loaded with antioxidants, which are a natural antidote to aging and disease-causing free radicals. The vitamins present in watermelon have been known to reduce the risk of heart disease, asthma, arthritis and even cancer. They also boost the immune system and improve eyesight. Need I go on?! Juice your own watermelon and enjoy a glass after a good workout or anytime this summer!

Coconut: Not only is coconut wonderful in or on anything in the summertime, it also has unbelievable super food health benefits. The fruit of the coconut has the ability to prevent aging. Also, eating coconuts will increase your metabolism and improve digestion. Another way to get the health benefits of coconut is to buy coconut oil. It’s kind of pricey — but definitely worth it. One of my favorite breakfast foods is toast with coconut oil, peanut butter and honey. Delicious and nutritious in so many ways!

Now that you’re aware of some seasonal super foods, hit up your local farmers market and see if you can get some good deals on these goodies. Your taste buds and your body will thank you!
