We all know that famous line from "A Love Story", when Ali McGraw looks up at her husband eyes full, chin wobbling and says "Love means never having to say you're sorry." Touching? Yes True? I'd have to argue It made me wonder, what about love grants you a get out of jail free card? Why does love allow you to overlook hurtful comments and actions? If love means never having to say you're sorry, then who is to account for unresolved issues and, more importantly, hurt feelings? Arguments happen and they happen frequently. Let's face it; idealistically a relationship brings together two previously incomplete hearts, cheesily enough. Realistically, a relationship also attempts to join two complete personalities- neuroses, bad habits and conflicting desires included. All of which can lead to petty miscommunications or misunderstandings that often spiral out of control and lead to a full-scale war. But really regardless of who started a fight, or who was at fault, there are casualties on both sides. Really, you're just waiting for those two little words that will stop the cold war and end tension.
Without that apology there will be no groundwork for forgiveness. And, no, sometimes an apology isn't a cure all, but even the attempt speaks truer to being in love than expecting to dodge responsibility. An apology takes a certain amount of selflessness. The ability to acknowledge having hurt someone, letting go of pride and putting someone else before yourself This is what love allows us to do, not side-step blame.
So next time you fight, if you love them, say you're sorry, even if you know it isn't your fault. Read More
