First, don't be bothered by negative reviews. This is your opinion from your experiences and may not reflect what others have gone through. Second, I think you are very clear, honest, and helpful. This is an advice column and that is exactly what you give. Readers can take it or leave it. I would like to hear a few specifics (if you have the room, that is). I know magazine space is precious, but it would be interesting to learn why your new friends were so "different" and an example of how they opened your mind. For instance, a friend's son went to Penn on a football scholarship and lasted less than one year because the students were so different from his high school friends he was never able to adjust. (Personally, I don't think he could cut the academic demands, either.) Would your advice be specific enough to help him if he read your column? Best of luck with this endeavor.
