Politically Savvy: Another Hat in the Ring

As of last week, one more man has joined the crowded field of presidential candidates: Fred Thompson. After months of hedging about whether he was really going to run or not, the former Law & Order star finally officially declared his intent to run for president, and not a moment too soon - he has just joined Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Sam Brownback, Newt Gingrich, James Gilmore, George Pataki, John McCain, Tom Tancredo, Tommy Thompson, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Chuck Hagel, and Ron Paul on the Republican side, not to mention the eight Democratic candidates too: Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, and Bill Richardson.

This election is building up already even though it's 2007 - simply because it's the most exciting and open one in years. For the first time, no sitting president is running for re-election, and no sitting vice president is running for president, so the nomination from either of the two major parties is open to anyone willing to campaign for it. It's exciting for political junkies, but certainly a bit of a headache for informed voters who can't keep track of all 22 candidates. Eventually, they'll start dropping out, one by one, until only the frontrunners are left, and even those will be weeded out by the primaries in early 2008. If you aren't yet registered to vote, or changed your address since we all know college students move around a lot - get registered, because this is one election that you don't want to miss out on your opportunity to vote in!
