Gaucho pants and crops are back with a vengeance. Believe it or not, these comfy, fashionable garments made an appearance in the sixties and seventies. Today's designers have spruced them up a bit and reintroduced them to the masses. Gauchos are perfect for all women, especially those with busy lifestyles like college students and young professionals because, combined with the right accessories, they can be worn almost anytime, anywhere.

There are few items in a woman's closet that can be worn at all times, from a night out to the morning after to campus and even to work. In fact, aside from undergarments, there may be _nothing_ in your closet that matches such a description. Well girls, worry no longer. Say hello to the oh-so-versatile Gaucho pant. It is a wide-legged, flowy pant that comes in cropped and full lengths, a style that was around in the sixties and inspired by South American cattle herders who wore similar pants and lace-up boots as part of their everyday ensemble.

The 1968 version of the Gaucho pant, as seen in McCall's magazine.

The beauty of the Gauchos, especially those with polyester or rayon in them, is that they are so comfortable that you could in fact herd cattle in them. If you wanted. But I suggest you keep a pair on you even when you're not roaming the farmlands of Argentina and Uruguay.

The Party Gaucho

When you're out on the town, Gauchos can be your best friend. Throw a pair on with a cute tank, a metallic, chunky belt, and some strappy heels for the perfect outfit. Believe me, you can drop it like it's hot about a million times in this outfit. University of Florida student Genevieve Anderson, 20, wears her Gauchos out all the time. "I wore them downtown one night, and I danced the entire time! I was comfortable in them but I still felt so sexy," she said.

Lindsay Melling, 22, a Manager-in-training at the Buckle in Gainesville, Florida, dances at a club in her Gaucho crops.

The Casual Gaucho

Take off the heels. Throw off the belt. Put on a comfy cotton tank and your favorite pair of flip flops, and grab your books! Just between me and you, I have actually worn my Gauchos out, slept in them, and worn them to class the next day. Hey, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. "I love my Gaucho pants because I can wear them with anything, even my Birkenstocks," said Stephanie Trafton, 22, an English major at the University of Florida. "They're as comfortable as sweatpants but a lot more stylish."

The Professional Gaucho

Most places of business don't require a suit to be worn everyday. Gauchos can be a great workday piece because, paired with a button-down blouse and matching pumps, they take on yet another personality: fashion-forward career woman.

Every woman needs a good pair of Gaucho pants or crops to complete her wardrobe. You can purchase them at most department stores or smaller fashion retailers. Nordstrom carries Gauchos priced around $100, or smaller chains like Forever XXI carry them for closer to $20. In upcoming months, look for Gauchos in a wide array of fabrics and colors, especially tweeds and wools for the chilly days of winter.

These can be found at Urban Outfitters.
