Last Minute Help :::: Hot Tech Gifts for 2005

iPods! There's no getting around it...iPods are the hottest gift of the season. Sound expensive? Don't fret because there's an iPod or iPod accessory out there that will fit your budget. The iPod shuffle, usually found for $99, is slowly becoming available for less and it doubles as a USB file storage unit (disk drives are sooo last millenium). On the upper end of the iPod spectrum, we have the new iPod Video, which can run up to $399.

If you're a student, you can get a significant discount on your iPod purchase here.

Now for accessories! Check out this range of goodies for the iPod-lover in your life.
$2 skins that protect the iPod,
$15 prepaid iTunes gift cards,
$32.95 Sharper Image iPod speaker and dancing puppy, all-in-one,
$99.95 Sharper Image kits for listening to your iPod in the shower,
$200.00 stereo-quality speaker sets.

Tip: Don't spring for the iTunes Cingular phone, yet. Some better ones are on their way!

Wireless Networks! There's little as boring as studying in one place all the time. Enable mobility with a wireless network and your laptop-fiend friend or family member can catch some rays while doing their computing. Networking is very easy to set up and can be quite affordable. Just make sure that you set up a secure network, to reduce your chances of hackage. See CNet's wi-fi recommendations here.

Cellphone Headsets! Bad drivers yapping on their cellphones are totally out of style and against the law in some states. In any case, you'll be much safer using a headset while you drive and you'll be amazed at how many more shopping bags you can carry when you don't need to hold your cellphone up to your ear. Let's not forget the rumors of cellphones causing brain damage. Finally, check to see if your phone is Bluetooth-enabled. This great new technology is connected to all sorts of appliances, including cars, so be sure to check it out and get an appropriate Bluetooth headset. So get that phone out of your way (into a pocket, purse, car door), and start yapping away safely.

Online Services! With gas prices so high and with so little time, help your friends out by gifting an online service.
Here are a few ideas:

  • Netflix DVD Rentals
  • Online Photo Processing at Snapfish
  • Ceiva digital photo frame and service (for those without a computer who want to see your online photos)
  • Napster, Yahoo Music, or eMusic subscription
  • eBay Gift Certificates
  • Delivered fresh produce from Planet Organics, Henry and David, or your local business

Tivo box and service! Ahhh...the good old days when we had time to watch commercials... no more! Right now, you can get Tivo DVR boxes for $49.99 or you can get a DVR box AND 3 months of service for only $88.85. Without a videotape, you can record your favorite shows and skip all of the commercials.

This is a great list because I never thought about most of the items you mentioned. I seem to be stuck in the Mall mindset where the only presents that come to mind are clothes, perfumes, and CDs. I see now that digital gifts are the way to go! I will keep this list in mind for birthday presents as well!
