Now is the time to slow down and reflect on the past year; to look at what we’ve accomplished in 2013 and chart where we are headed in the new year. It is also a chance to spend some quality time with family and friends. Sometimes, however, without a strong support group, the holidays can be the loneliest time of year.
Whether you’re feeling extra-grateful or your trying to keep your head above water this year, one of the best ways to feel good is to help someone else. It keeps you out of your own head for a while where negative thoughts can breed and gives you something productive and meaningful to do with your time.
What ‘random acts of kindness’ can you easily execute right now?:
Help out around the house. Help out a member of your family with cooking or cleaning or work with a sibling on a class project. It’s a great way to bond with family and take a little stress out of their life.
Volunteer. Find and organization your passionate about or start your own! It’s a great way to get out and meet new people with similar interests. I, personally, love animals so anything I can do to help out I will! Check out more Chicster-approved volunteer opportunity ideas here.
Don’t forget your friends. Help out a friend who may have to work a long shift this season by bringing them a snack to work while you’re running errands; or send them a text/email just to let them know you are thinking of them.
Donate what you don’t use anymore. Go through your closet and give what you no longer wear to someone in need…you’ll be well-organized as well as helping someone else– its a win-win!
Remember to treat yourself! Your wellbeing is important too! Schedule a day of pampering yourself, after a long semester deserve it! When you are at your best you can be your best for others.
